Inserting Text On A Photograph with Photoshop

I had a question the other day about how to enter text onto a photograph using Photoshop.  It’s one of those things that as soon as you know, it’s really easy.  Here is what I’m creating:

Photoshop Text Tool - Christmas Lights Image

I’m sure there are a few ways to do it, but here’s what I find the easiest.

In this post I’ll go through the Text Tool in Photoshop.  I’ll then show you how to add some effects to your text in another post.

Photoshop Text Tool  This is the “Tool” bar that sits on the left side of your window in the Default View in Photoshop CS2.  It should be similar in other versions of Photoshop.

The button selected here is the “T”, which stands for “Text” - this makes it nice and easy to start with.

Once you’ve opened the file you want to add the text to, click on the Text Tool and then click and drag to make the size of text box that you want.  If it’s not in the exact position you want don’t worry, we can move it later.

Now type in the text that you want.  If you can’t see any text (this happens to me frequently), the text size may be too small.

While the Text Tool is still selected, highlight your text and change the type of font and the size to what you want to see.  There will be a tick at the top right hand side of the Text Tool bar that you’ll need to click to confirm your changes.

You can also change the colour of your text by highlighting your text and then clicking in the colour box on the Text Tool bar at the top of the screen.

That’s really the basics of adding text to an image.

In next week’s post I’ll go through how to warp the text so it curves as in the image above and also adding some affects to the text to really make it stand out and not look so flat.
