High As A Kite
I haven’t flown a kite since I was a kid. Recently I took my 3 year old cousin out to fly a kite and it was great fun! They’re tricky things to photograph though - particularly on a windy day. Here are a few hits and misses…
I thought panning was difficult, but following a kite that’s flapping around and around is much tougher than I thought it would be. So, here was the first attempt:
Alright, so next I tried to use the panning technique of focusing on one spot and following that to take the photograph. As you can see, that didn’t work well either. I forgot that when panning the object being photographed is moving in a predictable way - kites don’t:
And finally, the wind picked up and the kite went up higher, which actually worked in my favour. So, accidentally I got the shot I was after:
One thing I learned is that photographing kites is much more difficult than children and animals
