Food Photography
Photographing your dinner may seem like a strange activity for a Saturday night, but I loved the colours and textures in a new recipe I tested out!
The official name is “Greek Rustic Pie” from a recipe book simply named Vegie Food (published by Murdoch Books), which is a pretty handy book to have for a vegetarian.
My food almost never looks anything like the recipe book picture. Even this time it looks a little different (probably because I substituted a different kind of pastry), but pretty close.
Here is the recipe book image of what the pie should look like:
Taking photos of food can be a little tricky - especially when you’re not in a studio, nor are you using professional kitchenware. Here is my attempt:

I’ve zoomed in and cropped tight here to ’shield’ the viewer from the very messy dish the pie was cooked in. Plus, Photoshop helped a little.
One thing to keep in mind when photographing food is to take the photo on an angle. Here is what the dish looks like when taken from above:

The difference is a pretty “flat” looking pie. I almost doesn’t look real. The recipe book picture is also taken on an angle with the dish showing, as well as plates in the background. This does add a more “homey” feel.
If I were to do this for anything more than illustration, I would have had a second, clean dish available to place the cooked pie into. Then I would take the photo with the shiny, squeaky clean dish in the picture…
