Experience with Natural Light

Understanding natural light is a huge part of photography.  I remember when I was doing my training, one of the assignments was to set up your camera on a tripod and photograph a sunset at 10 minute intervals.  That worked in summer, but in winter, the sun in Queensland moves very quickly.

Here is the progression of the sun rising - each photo was taken about 1 minute apart…

Now for the next photo - taken only 1 minute later…

And now for the next one.  This was taken about 3 minutes later…

It shows how important natural light is, and how quickly the good light can disappear!  By the last photo above, nearly all the mood and colour has been washed out by the rising sun.

As a contrast, the next photo was also taken on the same day - about 3 hours later.  It’s amazing how quickly the weather can change!

It’s fun playing with light.  Get yourself a tripod and shutter release cable, and off you go!
