Chocolate Heaven
Move over Willy Wonka! For true lovers of chocolate you’ll understand the obsession. There is a family owned chocolate company in Australia called Haigh’s, based in Adelaide. Visiting family down in Adelaide recently I went on a tour of their factory and was in chocolate heaven!
Haigh’s is a family owned company and began in 1915. Originally they were not chocolate makers themselves, but brought in chocolates and sold them through their stores. In 1946 the grandson of the Haigh founder joined the company and he travelled to Switzerland and stayed with the Lindt family to learn the art of making chocolate. From that day on Haigh’s made their own chocolate, and the rest, as they say, is history.
There are over 250 different varieties in the Haigh’s range. My personal favourites are the dark chocolate roasted almonds, macadamias, and the dark chocolate frogs.
Tours of the factory operate Monday to Saturday at 11am, 1pm and 2pm. You do need to book, as the tour I was on was full. It is a great way to see how the chocolate is made and to pick up some varieties I’ve never seen at any of the retail stores.
Remember, good dark chocolate contains antioxidants, and we all need those in our diets!
